The Castle Golf Club was the venue for a fabulous instalment of the annual PPU Golf Outing, which took place on Thursday, May 14.
Whilst numbers were down on the previous year, a field of 50 enthusiastic players still took part. Those playing in the afternoon enjoyed the best of the playing conditions, as early-morning rain gave way to dry conditions for the afternoon session.
Past-pupil representation spanned each decade from the 1940s through to noughties and involved participants from 17 different golf clubs. The dinner was also very well-attended and the food and banqueting staff at the Castle were excellent.
The competition format involved Singles Stableford as well as a 3-ball Team event. We introduced a slight twist to the team event this year, with one score to count on the par 5s, two scores on the par 4s, and three scores on the par 3s.
David Mullan (1991) generously provided plenty of refreshments and snack bars to ensure that every golfer was kept well-hydrated and nourished during their round.
Ray Sloan, playing off a handicap of 14, came home with a great score of 37pts to claim the overall prize. He was closely followed by Robert Henson in second place with a score of 33pts.
The Past President's prize was won by Richard Byrne with a score of 32pts. The team prize was won by Ray Sloan, Declan Howard, and Val Quinn with a fine score of 85pts.
Congratulations to all our prize winners, for those that didn't, including me, there's always next year.

An excellent day of golf was followed by a very enjoyable dinner and the prize giving. Thanks to Eugene Strong (1994), Febvre Wines (febvrewines.ie) for sourcing a great selection of wines as prizes which were gratefully received by all the prize winners.
Particular thanks to David Leech (1992) for providing a Killeen Castle fourball, our main prize, and to all our sponsors and supporters who made the day possible. Finally, thanks to the Castle Golf Club and, in particular, Billy and Toni for helping to put on a fantastic day. We look forward to returning to the Castle GC Rathfarnham on Friday, May 20 2016 for next year's event.
