AGM 2014

The St. Mary’s College Union Annual General Meeting took place on Sunday 7 September 2014 following a mass in the school church. The AGM was well attended and attendees received a thorough briefing on the state of the PPU.

The meeting, hosted by outgoing president Gareth Halpin, listened as Hon Secretary Michael Moriarty outlined on a month by month basis the various events that took place during this year. This was followed by George Walsh providing his lastTreasurer’s Report. George is stepping down after 4 years in the role as he undertakes a new job in Cork.

The finances are in good shape although a number of events incurred losses but are fundamental to the ethos of the Union and are successful in terms of membership participation and growing the membership numbers. Gordon Murray outlined in his Hon Membership Secretary’s Report that he continues to work hard on various initiatives to increase membership. He noted that the union has approximately 900 members at present.

In his final remarks as president, Gareth Halpin thanked everyone for all their support during his year in office. He thanked the officers of the Union for their work and dedication and in particular George Walsh who steps aside after a number of years on committee.

He then called on Daragh Coleman to come forward and take the chain of office. Daragh addressed the meeting and thanked Gareth for his fine work over the previous 12 months. Daragh said that it was a proud day for him and he was very excited about the year ahead. He also mentioned that he was delighted that Colin Smyth had agreed to be the union’s new vice president. Colin brings a wealth of experience and will be a valuable resource to Daragh.

Senior school principal Denis Murphy addressed the meeting on matters regarding day to day life in the College. Academically, the school was performing very strongly with last year’s leaving cert year achieving very high grades – over 45% of the year achieved over 500 points. He reminded the committee that the school was celebrating 125 years in operation this year and various initiatives were planned to mark the milestone.

For now, Daragh and the committee are busy preparing for the year ahead and specifically the union’s flagship event, the Annual Dinner which is on Friday 14 November 2014. Keep your diaries free for this great night!
